Button hooks were popular late in the Victorian period when over-the-ankle shoes were popular. Slide the tool through the button hole and around the button. Then pull it back through the button hole and voila! This happens to be a gorgeous button hook, with a mother of pearl handle. I closed the hook in order to hang it but you get the idea! It hangs on a mother of pearl chain. Great look!
